Katarina began ice-skating at age five. Soon, her talents became apparent and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. She was introduced to Jutta Muller in this school. Witt achieved her breakthrough in the second position she placed at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured the attention of everyone, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the sport. Olympic victory Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. The following year she took home an even tighter contest. The free skater was unable to win, but she won the gold medal in the mandatory figures and her program was short. Witt is the first figure skater female to win this event two times after Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful acting. Fans were amazed by her, despite the fact that she placed seventh. Witt was elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
